1. What’s Your Niche?
Every successful food business has a niche that they’ve capitalized on. Sure, they all look to branch out into other niches from time to time; however, they always stay true to the niche that started it all for them.
What’s going to separate your food business from all other businesses out there?
More importantly, what aspect of the food industry are you passionate about? Maybe it’s organic foods, being vegan-focused, having high-quality ingredients, offering fast service, etc.
Whatever that looks like, incorporate it into the niche for your business.
For example, catering businesses are a dime a dozen. However, if you have a catering business that’s entirely focused on plant-based protein meals, you’ve got yourself a specific niche that consumers are looking for!
2. Think of Food Product Ideas
Granted, this may be the very first thing that prompted you to even start a food business in the first place.
You may have gotten so many compliments on the cakes you make that you decided to start a bakery. However, if that isn’t your story and you have no idea what you’re going to make, that’s perfectly fine as well!
Start by going into your kitchen and thinking of a few different recipes and food items that you could use in your business.
It’s not costly at all to go through several trials on a specific food product, so get creative!
Remember to have people besides yourself present that can try your meals and give honest feedback. What do they like about the food item? What else does it need? Ask them if they’d pay to have it again.
3. Study the Competition
Food business owners would be negligent in their job to not study the marketplace of their niche.
Do some research on the niche that you chose and see how many different competitors there are. Spoiler alert: there will be several competitors and it may seem overwhelming.
If the marketplace seems too flooded then your “niche” might be too broad. Try to make it more specific in order to lessen the legitimate competitors you’ll have.
What products do those competitors have on their menu? What does their customer base look like? How many different competitors are there?
Once you have a list of competitors, order an item or two from their menu and assess them. What would you differently? How can you capitalize on their mistakes?
4. Create a Buyer’s Persona for Your Customers
Now that you have an idea of what your competitors look like, it’s time to take an honest look at what your legitimate customers will look like.
The best method for doing this is by creating a buyer persona. Get as specific as you possibly can.
What’s their demographic? What do they look like? How do they order the service that you provide? What times of the day do they eat? How can you draw them in to purchase your services and items?
Having an understanding of your customers will help you know how to target them in your sales and marketing campaigns down the line.
5. Create a Business Plan
Behind every great business idea is a solid business plan that turns the idea into a reality in the marketplace.
Your business plan should have all of your research written into a helpful document.
It’s crucial to getting the funding you need. Without it, your only hope is to come up with the funding yourself.
Be sure to include things like the title of your business, your business model concept, the brand you’re looking to create, your target customers, the location of your HQ, your intended lean production, etc.

6. Buy the Proper Equipment
Now that you have a strategy in place and you know the food products you’ll be selling, it’s time to purchase all the equipment you need.
These are things such as food ingredients, cooking supplies, cooking machinery, dishes, food packaging, appliances, etc.
You’ll also need to use things such as ingredients and food labels, measuring cups, and food utensils.
What’s important is that you purchase all the equipment you need and get started.
Don’t kick yourself if you continuously have to run back to the store for items you didn’t think of. Give yourself the time to learn what works best and always look for different equipment pieces that can improve your production.
