1. Type Ia Diamonds
Diamonds have classifications based on the type and the element that they contain. Normally, they’re formed by the combination of extreme pressure and temperature under the Earth’s surface. However, type Ia diamond has impurities that contain nitrogen.
These types of diamonds make up the majority of the world’s natural diamonds. As such, these are the diamond you often see, described as a large, colorless, but sparkly gem. Although colorless, there are some natural diamonds that have a light tone of color to them.
2. Type IIa Diamonds
Among the natural diamonds, type IIa diamonds are the rarest. This is because these have no nitrogen or boron impurities, making it chemically the purest diamond. One of the lesser-known facts about diamonds is that type IIa diamonds are always unique from each other, raising their value even more.
These differences can be as big as their size and shape, or as minute as the diamond’s clarity. An example of this diamond is the Cullinan diamond, which is also one of the largest diamonds in the world.
3. Type Ib Diamonds
Type Ib is the rarest among its kind because it has a different atomic structure compared to other types. The normal atomic structure of a diamond has clustered together. For this type, they’re scattered and isolated.
Because of this difference in atomic structure, the crystal lattice has an intense yellow hue. They can also be orange or brown, depending on the color intensity.
Their price also varies depending on their color intensity. You can check out online diamond appraisal services to determine these diamonds’ value.
4. Type IIb Diamonds
If the other diamonds have impurities like nitrogen, type IIb has boron. What made them special is the boron gives it a bluish-gray tint and electric conductive properties.
