4 Amazing Dog Skills You Wouldn’t Believe
As any dog lover will tell you, dogs are amazing! These creatures are loving, loyal, friendly, and intelligent. Not only that, but they have some incredible skills that they use to wow and help the humans they love every day.
You probably already know about many of the wonderful things that dogs can do. However, there are also other dog skills that you may not know about yet. To learn more about the fantastic and astonishing things that dogs can do, read on. In this informative post, you’ll learn more fun facts about the wonders of dogs.
1. Sense of Smell
As you likely already know, dogs have an incredible sense of smell. They have over 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses; humans only have about six million. As a result, dogs can smell things from very far away, and they can identify far more smells than we can. Some scientists even say that a dog’s sniffer is 10,000 times better than ours.
Because of this, dogs are helpful to humans by finding missing people, rescuing people after accidents, and looking for bombs (learn more) and other weapons. Without dogs, many of these things would be undetected, so thank goodness for dogs!
2. Understanding
Dogs are smarter than many people give them credit for. As any dog owner will tell you, dogs understand a great deal of what is going on around them. Scientific studies have demonstrated that dogs feel empathy, that they react to emotional sounds like crying or laughter, and that they can recognize a wide variety of different objects. They react to vocal commands and they view humans as part of their families. As animals go, dogs are about as human as they come!
3. Speed and Endurance
Speed and endurance are dog skills people rarely consider because most dogs live rather lazy lives of leisure. However, all breeds of dogs can run rather fast and can keep up a good pace for several miles. Of course, there are certain breeds that run faster than others, and some that are built for long, intense shifts of herding, but truly, all dogs are born to be active and in motion for long periods of time – like their wild cousins – wolves.
4. Service
Dogs offer service to humans in so many ways – but working specifically as service and therapy dogs seems to be a job that suits them so well. Service dogs help people who are visually impaired, mobility impaired and hearing impaired. Some are able to sense seizures before they happen and alert their owners so they can prepare themselves. Therapy dogs help people who experience physical or emotional pain.
The fact that dogs can feel empathy for humans and sense emotions make them cut out for this type of work. If you’ve ever met a therapy or service dog, then you know that they love the work they do.
Dog Skills Are Amazing
As you can see, there are many amazing dog skills to be admired and celebrated in the dog world! Dogs are special animals and we are lucky to have them in our lives. These are just a few of the incredible things dogs can do; science is learning about more and more all the time. Go give your dog a pat on the head and thank him or her for being so great!
