Computershare built a road to success. You just need to take the wheel.
In August 2017, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported baby boomers born between 1957 and 1964 held an average of 11.9 jobs by the time they reach 50 years old. A LinkedIn study published in April 2016 found millennials who graduated college between 2001 and 2010 changed jobs an average of 2.6 times in their first five years out of college. At that rate, millennials will change jobs approximately five times more than previous generations.
Regardless of age, don’t we all want to work for a company that encourages us to stick around and build a career? And if we can find a company that not only supports professional development, but also offers compensation and benefits that allow you to live well and stay healthy – well that’s even better.
Such a company exists, and it is hiring for full-time positions in cities across the country – including Louisville. Take a look at Computershare’s current job openings.
Computershare was founded in 1978 in Melbourne, Australia. Since then it has become a world leader in financial administration, expanding into 20 countries. Computershare came to the United States in 2001 and now has almost 5,000 U.S. team members.
All large companies offer jobs. Punch in, punch out. Watch the clock in between. Computershare offers careers. Many leaders throughout the company started in entry-level positions and worked their way up to team leads and higher-level management. With ample opportunity for growth and offices around the globe, employees are limited only by their drive.
“I have found a place where I can finally sink my roots in and say that this could be my career instead of just another job,” says Justin Bush, who started as a customer resolution specialist and is now team lead within the Special Issuance department. “Computershare cares about its employees and wants to see each of them succeed.”
If you are ready to stop job-hopping and start building a career, let Computershare steer you in the right direction. Here’s how:
1. The communication center: a starting point for success
Many employees start their Computershare career in the communication center – it’s what we call our call centers. Mind you, this isn’t your typical call center where you recite the same script call after call. At Computershare, you’re interacting with investors, stockbrokers and human resources executives. You might talk to them about wealth management, securities or an employee equity plan.
“Although I had customer service experience, I didn’t know anything about stock,” says communications center team leader Shannon Davis, who started her career as a call center customer resolution specialist. “I overcame this by becoming familiar with the resources provided. I researched every question the shareholders asked and made sure I provided accurate information.”
2. Keep moving up
Computershare offers, and encourages, advancement both within the call center and throughout the company. The skills you gain at entry level provide a foundation for advanced roles.
Jeremy Nobles worked as a bartender and as a deputy jailer before joining Computershare. During his first week on the job, he asked his trainer, “How do I get to where you are?” The trainer mentored Nobles and helped him set goals for advancement. He’s now a Learning & Development Consultant in the Learning and Development department. “Computershare kept its word about opportunities and growth,” Nobles says. “I appreciate that if I work hard, I get rewarded.”
3. Receive ongoing professional development
In addition to ongoing training and professional development, Computershare offers tuition reimbursement to encourage ongoing education.
“I learn something new at Computershare every day,” says assistant vice president/relationship manager Sharona Ellevold. “Computershare has great support staff, written resources and ongoing training modules I can use anytime when in doubt.”
4. Have a life outside work
Computershare continually aims to enhance employee engagement. They accomplish this by offering a casual work environment, social activities, reasonable schedules and so much more. “I enjoy my weekends off, but I also enjoy working with my friends,” says Davis. “I have made friendships at Computershare that will last a lifetime.”
At Computershare, you won’t have a boss demanding you work 12-hour days. You will get generous paid time off, New York Stock Exchange holidays and an excellent benefits package centered on health, wellness and investing in your future.
5. Be a change agent for good
Computershare cares about its communities as well as its employees. The company sets annual targets to reduce environmental impact. This benefits the company as well as the cities it calls home. Computershare gives employees volunteer opportunities each year; however, many staff members take it to the next level. Every year, Computershare employees participate in food and gift drives in the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK. For example, Colorado employees collected two carloads of toys for the Care4Colorado Toy Drive.
Employees worldwide have walked and cycled hundreds of thousands of miles in support of global charities. “Computershare has excelled as a valuable member of the Louisville community through its charitable events and green initiative,” says Computershare financial crime officer Erik Bell. “The company’s community involvement and team-building activities are two things I enjoy most about working at Computershare.”
6. Take charge of your career
A supportive environment and professional development help employees grow within their positions and move into higher ones as well. Computershare helps employees realize and amplify their strengths. “If you want to get to a certain position in Computershare, it starts with you and your dedication but you also have an immense amount of help from the trainers, your peers and your leadership team,” says Bush. Tax team lead, Kerri Murphy, feels Computershare is “a great company that can turn a job into a career.”
Nobles’ story of moving from bartender to L&D Consultant exemplifies the Computershare spirit. “If you’re a hard worker and looking for a career, this is your time,” he says. “It’s truly a place for growth and opportunity. My journey proves this. I have accomplished more than I expected here and been given opportunity after opportunity to shine. You get out what you put in.”
