Get in the Loop: UPS Employee Benefits to Include Housing for Prospective Students
Prospective college students who live outside the Louisville Metro area have an added challenge when continuing their education: finding affordable housing. Finding housing requires the prospective student to land a job that pays well enough to afford the opportunity to live away from home, while simultaneously providing them with flexibility in their schedule that allows for ample study time. Sensing this need, UPS has enhanced its educational benefits program out of their Worldport hub in Louisville specifically with these types of students in mind, offering to pay for housing for all prospective students who qualify.
The Kentucky LOOP program (LOOP being an acronym meaning “Living Options and Opportunities Path”) is a partnership between UPS and Metropolitan College, which adds housing benefits to an already lengthy list of amenities for prospective students of Jefferson Community & Technical College who qualify.
How It Works
The Kentucky LOOP program is uniquely designed to provide students of more than 100 counties outside the Louisville Metro area housing, tuition benefits and employment to support their continuing education at Jefferson Community & Technical College. Students earn a housing stipend for use at one of two student housing apartment complexes adjacent to the University of Louisville, up to 100% KY resident tuition, book reimbursement, and all the amenities of the University of Louisville via the UofL Ultra Program. In exchange, LOOP program participants work any shift at UPS Worldport in Louisville. Plus, any student who works third shift (night) for UPS Next Day Air is eligible for additional graduation benefits totaling $4,075. This is a real employment opportunity, not an internship. Students receive a weekly paycheck as well as all the benefits UPS provides their employees, such as medical and dental.
Who Can Participate
The Kentucky LOOP program applies only to KY students who live outside Jefferson, Bullitt, Oldham, Spencer, Henry, Meade, Shelby and Trimble counties who procure employment at UPS Worldport in Louisvile and enroll to attend Jefferson Community & Technical College. Students must sign a housing agreement and stay enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in each of the fall, spring and summer semesters.
University of Louisville has offered students participating in the Kentucky LOOP program the opportunity to reside at The Bellamy or The Arch, part of UofL housing. The UPS housing stipend of $325 a month (available for 24 months) will pay 100% of the roommate option. If the student opts for alternative housing options at either student apartment complex, the student is responsible for the difference in cost.
Living at the Bellamy or The Arch is designed with the busy student in mind. With a free shuttle from complexes directly to JCTC, getting around is quick and affordable. The student apartment complexes themselves are state of the art, with pool and work out facilities on site. Plus Loop participants receive a Cardinal Card, which provides the student access to all of UofL campus activities and amenities.
For any perspective participant in the Kentucky LOOP Program, the first step is to file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
