Our National Epidemic
Every 19.7 seconds there is an automobile crash caused by drivers using their cell phone. In fact, 25% of all automobile crashes are caused by texting and driving. Annually, drivers texting leads to over 1.6 million crashes and 390,000 injuries.
In a period of history in which we are getting smarter and more technologically savvy, we have allowed our preoccupation with staying in touch to make us as dumb as a rock. Would you drive drunk?
Of course not.
But you go barreling down the highway at 70 miles per hour and your fascination with what Uncle Bob said about Cousin Evan causes you to leave common sense behind. So, you take your eyes off of the road to find out. Who cares if the truck in the adjoining lane is making a tight lane change in front of you. You need to know now! Well you will finally get your answer as the front of your car finds the back bumper of the lane changing truck.

Do you know that if you text and drive you are six times more likely to cause a crash than by driving drunk. So why do it?
Do you ever recall hearing driver’s education teachers explain the amount of time you can safely take your eyes off the road? NO! You know why they never taught it? Because there is no safe amount of time.
Would you close your eyes and run down a staircase?
No!
So why close your eyes to the road when you are driving?
We were speaking to a friend who drives over 30,000 miles a year for business. They told us that when they travel they see truck drivers trying to drive and text, young drivers trying to drive and text, and actually people of all ages trying to drive and text.
One problem…you cannot do it safely.
When you drive and text, you tend to drive a little slower, and since you are not paying attention, you start to drift, slowly crossing over the dividing line into other lanes. Hopefully other drivers will spot you and veer out of the way. But occasionally there isn’t room for them to move. Then it is all they can do to swerve out of the way of a crash. Why do people continue to put their lives, their children’s lives and the lives of those travelers unlucky enough to share the road with them at risk when they choose to do something incredibly dangerous?
25% of all automobile crashes are caused by texting and driving
It is a question that 37,000 people in the U.S. every year will not get the chance to answer because they have been killed in a distracted driving -related crash.
We need to stop texting and driving before it kills us.
It can wait.
