Experience Expert Care at New Vision Eye Center
People of all ages can suffer from a wide variety of eye diseases that cause poor vision;
however, as we age, visual health issues increase. Taking proper care of our vision by having
preventive, annual, or bi-annual eye exams is the first step to ensuring healthy vision for a
lifetime.
For those who live on the Treasure Coast of Florida, there’s no better place to do that than New
Vision Eye Center in Vero Beach. At their state-of-the-art facility, they provide general vision
care, laser cataract and laser refractive surgical procedures, custom dropless cataract surgery,
diabetic eye care, and diseases of the eye including glaucoma and macular degeneration. They
also perform functional eyelid surgery for those who have vision impaired by droopy eyelids.
Eye exams and surgical procedures are performed by highly skilled, board-certified
ophthalmologists who share the common goal of providing world-class eye care to their
patients. The Center’s team includes Paul V. Minotty, MD, David J. O’Brien, MD, Stephen M.
Tate, MD, and Robert M. Reinauer, MD.
While there are several threats to good eye health, the most common are cataracts and glaucoma, which can be expertly treated at New Vision Eye Center.
Conditions
Cataracts
While some may find the idea of cataract surgery daunting, it’s reassuring to know that the
procedure is one of the most commonly and successfully performed operations in the United
States.
Inside the eye is a soft lens that refracts light rays as they enter the eye, helping us to see. This lens should be clear, but if you have a cataract, the lens has become hardened and cloudy, causing blurry vision and diminishes the perception of colors. This condition can only be corrected
by having the lens surgically removed and replaced with a new, clear artificial lens.
Drs. Minotty and Tate offer patients’ access to standard mono-focal lens implants as well as
toric lenses to correct astigmatism, and Near Vision lenses that can further reduce the need for
glasses after surgery. Collectively, they have performed over 50,000 cataract surgeries. They
provide an advanced cataract removal procedure that they customize to each of their patient’s
needs and lifestyle. Their patient Neda Heeter explains, “My ‘new vision’ allows me to see
clearly without glasses except for reading, which was my choice. I can now drive at night again,
which is something I stopped doing years ago because of my cataracts. I highly recommend The
Cataract Institute at New Vision Eye Center.” The Center also specializes in lens replacement,
piggyback lenses and corrective implants.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a potentially blinding eye disorder that is unfortunately usually asymptomatic until
it very advanced. In addition to treating glaucoma patients with eye drops, New Vision also
offers safe and effective glaucoma laser treatment . “You can treat glaucoma with eye drops,
but people who don’t respond to eye drops are good candidates for a laser treatment,” said Dr.
Paul Minotty, adding that a lot of patients currently on eye drops can stop using them when
they have the glaucoma laser procedure.
For patients that don’t respond to eye drops or laser therapy to control their glaucoma, Dr.
Stephen Tate provides surgical options including Canaloplasty and the ExPRESS Mini-Shunt.
These procedures are performed in New Vision’s state-of-the-art surgical center and can be
done as a standalone surgery or combined with cataract surgery.
Patients are educated about their options and guided through the procedure by the
knowledgeable and caring staff at New Vision Eye Center. As patient Sharon Gunn-Doston, who
underwent treatment for glaucoma and cataract explains, “I have worn glasses since I was
about 5 years old, so severely nearsighted that I was blind without them. Then I developed
glaucoma, and my eyesight got worse. From there I developed cataracts, and I was really
frightened that I would lose what little sight I had. Dr. Tate at said that he couldn’t guarantee
that I would have better vision, but he would do his best. My vision is now 20/25 in my right
eye and my left eye is 20/20. This truly is a miracle! I can see clearly now without glasses or
contacts. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and still in shock. Dr. Tate and New Vision Eye
Center have given me the ability to see with such clarity and focus without any correction – and
I am forever grateful.”
Eye Floaters
Besides the most commonly performed procedures, the condition of floating objects in ones vision have become an important topic at New Vision Eye Center, where retinal specialist Dr. Robert Reinauer
Look and See Better
Dr. David J. O’Brien provides LASIK laser vision correction and functional eyelid surgery in
addition to general ophthalmology.
Their advanced laser system, called Eye-Q, has revolutionized LASIK surgery with treatments
times of only 2- to 20 seconds, resulting in more comfort for the patient, reduced healing time
and more standardized results.
Dr. O’Brien served as an FDA study investigator for the system and says the Eye-Q was in
development for 15 years and utilizes missile-tracking technology. “It’s very safe because of the
tracking and rapid treatment,” said O’Brien.
“This technology is a great advancement in laser vision correction. The FDA has approved the
Eye-Q to safely and accurately treat the broadest range of prescriptions, allowing excellent
outcomes for the vast majority of patients desiring more visual freedom.” The net result is
more patients will be able to get this procedure and not wear corrective lenses.
Patients that undergo LASIK are often able to resume normal activities the day after their
procedure. Patients like Caitlin Rice, who was thrilled with the outcome of her surgery, saying,
“Not only was the staff of New Vision Eye Center phenomenal, but my results were absolutely
incredible. I went from not being able to see without my glasses on to 20/15 without them. I
can see things I’ve never been able to see before!”
In addition, Dr. O’Brien offers a solution to his patients who are having visual difficulties caused
by sagging eyelids. This can occur at any age but is generally simply a function of aging. Dr.
O’Brien is able to surgically lift the eyelid and/or the brow, which not only offers patients an
increase in their field of vision, but a more aesthetically appealing, youthful look as well.
