Seven Springs Gets Its Four Season Vibe On with Stream of Exceptional Events
We used to call it the “muddy season,” that period between snow and sun when the alpine terrain was considered impassable. Who knew, like picking a line on a black diamond run, half the challenge is how you look at it? Instantly, the spring rains and subsequent messy conditions transformed into a giant mud puddle for adults, just another excuse for some extreme play with friends. Bring on “Mud on the Mountain,” Seven Springs Resort’s launch into the tough mudder world that turns April’s shoulder season into a hootenanny for the adventurous. Mud on the Mountain is just one of several events planned over the “On” season that ranges from the annual Memorial Day concert series to July 4th fireworks to a series of BBQ and wine festivals throughout the summer months. Whether you like to get down and dirty or sample fine cabernet, Seven Springs has an event for you.
Best When Messy
Laurel Highlands may sound pastoral and pleasant, but it turns from Dr. Jekyll–serene meadows into Mr. “Skin Your” Hyde during the Seven Springs Mud on the Mountain 7-mile race. Contestants must cross the ponds, scramble over boulder fields and ascend incline after incline, and those are just some of the natural elements. You’ll also taste mud during stomach crawls, maneuver over obstacles, hand walk the ladders and take on a single rope or two in pursuit of your well-earned victory over, under and thru the yes, 30+ elements! Afterward, share your tales of trip-ups and entanglements with the whole gang at the Foggy Goggle Recovery Party. No one will look askance when you excuse yourself for a little rejuvenating you time at Trillium Spa. (Hint: book your treatment early!)
Families that Get Messy Remain Besties
Ask any Seven Springs veteran visitor about what makes this resort so special and you’ll likely hear “family” within the first couple sentences. After all, there’s good reason Seven Spring is ranked at the top “Best Family Resorts in America” year after year after year. So, it really shouldn’t surprise you that the adventurers here have crafted a Kids’ Mud on the Mountain course, an exciting 15 and 20-obstacle challenge (for ages 8-12 and 13-17 respectively) that has quickly become a Memorial Day Weekend tradition in many households. From the Mud Pit to Water Cooler, a giant slip and slide, tunnels to log leaps, each participant will achieve bragging rights without a video game or cell phone in sight. Messing up has never looked so good.
Playing in the Band Follows Playing in the Mud
Memorial Day Weekend at Seven Springs has always been a very special place, a chance to toss away the car keys and celebrate the start of summer with a new and old friend in a completely safe environment. Ask around and you’ll be astounded to learn how many present-day parents once called Seven Springs their Memorial Day Weekend home when they were kids. The traditions continue with some good ole country music, specifically the annual Country Legends Tribute Tour. These talented musicians take concert-goers on a melodic journey into the Zac Brown Band, Garth Brooks and Shania Twain songbook, among other familiar voices. There’s also plenty of time to knock out 18 holes of championship golf, whip down the Laurel Ridgeline Zipline Tour, even try your hand at skeet shooting with at Sporting Clays.
Adult Memory Making Over Memorial Day
Memorial Day Weekend offers plenty of adult fun as well, made even better in the “no-car-needed” resort. Seven Springs brings live music to its bar and restaurant stages just about every weekend of the year, but the guitars really heat up until midnight in the Bavarian Lounge. The house DJ gets feet shufflin’ until 1 am in the Matterhorn Lounge. Recuperate poolside at the Bavarian Beach Saturday afternoon before the Country Legends Concert and Zambelli Fireworks show. Sunday brings the beach back, brunch and a BBQ Buffet before the free Spinning Jenny concert. Like Saturday and Sunday, Bavarian Beach comes with a DJ on Monday from noon to 4 pm.
“The Food Trucks Are Coming, The Food Trucks are Coming!”
What do Fatboy’s, Taste of Nawlin’s and the Mobile Chef have in common? They are three of the more than 30 travelin’ chefs who are (food) truckin’ to Seven Springs for the 2nd Annual Fireworks and Food Trucks Festival June 15. Whether you prefer street tacos, chili, crepes or BBQ, you’ve queued up at the right resort this weekend. After dazzling your palate, the pyrotechnics light up the sky during two 45-minute shows, the largest fireworks display to ever grace Laurel Highlands. Music will fill the air and the Seven Spring Saloon will showcase several craft beers and cocktails all day long before the Foggy Goggle throws open the doors for 21+ after party.
Tapping in At Seven Springs
Pennsylvania takes its beer seriously, so it comes as no surprise that Seven Springs, home to one of the east coast’s best après ski scenes, is opening the taps to host the inaugural Pennsylvania Beer Festival June 22-23. The Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Somerset County Chamber of Commerce have teamed up with more than 40 craft breweries and brewpubs from across the state for a weekend of tastings, seminars and workshops. Whether you’re a hop head, lager lover or just jumping into this sudsy fray, chilling among the brewery brethren for the weekend, accompanied by live music and other events, will certainly produce plenty of tales when the ale trail heads to the Laurel Highlands for the summer solstice.
Some Like It Hot
It’s all BBQ all the time during the 9th annual Rib and Wing Festival August 2-4. Five celebrated pit bosses from Pigfoot BBQ to Smokin Joe’s Hog Wild Barbecue add flare to the weekend. These aren’t your backdoor neighbors out grillin’ on a Saturday afternoon, Armadillo’s BBQ and Rib Company has received over 160 culinary awards including the 2006/2007 NFL Hall of Fame Grand Champion for Most Outstanding Ribs and BBQ Sauce. If anyone knows ribs, it’s 6’5” 289 pound-guard Bruce Matthews, a 2007 inductee, or 2006 honorees John Madden and Reggie White. Butch’s Smack Your Lips BBQ has earned more than 400 distinctions including Grand Champion of New Jersey. Pigfoot BBQ claims “Peoples Choice Greatest Ribs in America” accolades, Smokin Joe’s and Mojo’s will tell you all about their ribbons too. Naturally, there’ll be a Beer Garden to cultivate and live music all weekend long. Remember, the best things in life are sticky.
Wine Down the Summer
The Seven Springs Wine Festival, August 23-25, promises to be one of Pennsylvania’s premier viticultural events of the year. But you don’t have to know your cabs from your pinto to enjoy pours from more than 30 wineries here, a showcase of vintages from Pennsylvania’s 200+ wineries. There are also seminars to enhance your knowledge, an artisan craft show and live music designed to complement the vintages. Book your visit then check back regularly as events are being added by the week.
Wait, There’s More!
