Prescription Savings Programs for Medicare Recipients
Can’t afford your prescriptions? Savings Programs and Extra Help are available for Medicare recipients.
Having to choose between buying groceries, paying bills or paying for prescriptions is a decision no Medicare beneficiary should have to make. If you or someone you know has limited income you may qualify for Medicare’s Extra Help Program.
The Extra Help Program or Low-Income Subsidy Program (LIS) helps qualified Medicare beneficiaries pay for their Medicare prescription drug program costs; such as premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance. Eligibility guidelines are based on income and assets and they change from year to year.
In 2018, NC SHIIP helped Medicare beneficiaries in the Piedmont Triad area save $4,843,024 in Medicare and Prescription Drug costs. Individuals who qualify for the program will receive Extra Help benefits with their Medicare Part D prescription drug plans at the 100 percent level. This means they will pay a reduced co-pay of $3.40 for generic drugs and $8.50 for name-brand drugs, as well as lower monthly premiums.
