7 Signs it’s Time to Have a New Roof Installed
Having a roof over your head means safety, security, and shelter. Yet, this is more than just a figure of speech.
The roof, like many other aspects of home maintenance, needs to be kept track of.
It’s important to know some of the issues your roof can face. Read on to discover 7 signs it’s time to have a new roof installed.
1. Missing Shingles
Missing shingles is a common problem that’s easy to spot. If your roof is in bad shape, strong winds can tear shingles away.
If the damage is isolated, it may only call for a small repair. However, if shingles keep going missing, a full replacement is in order.
2. Misshapen Shingles
Misshaped shingles are a sign of damage. Look for cracked, buckled, or curled shingles.
These misshapen shingles are letting outside elements in. Beyond that, they are also no longer attached effectively.
3. Moss and Algae Growth
Moss and algae are damaging to your roof.
Green patches on the shingles are moss buildup. The growth pushes under the shingles and allows moisture in. If this goes on for too long, you’ll need a new roof.
Another problem is gloecapsa magma. This is a common alga that looks like black streaks on the roof. Not only is this growth unsightly, but the algae feeds on the limestone in your shingle.
Before too long, the shingles will fall apart.
4. Sagging Structure
Look for sagging areas and low points in your roof. Dips in the roof structure are a bad sign. The low areas are generally an indicator of water damage. Moisture will pool in these spots and will begin to rot away the roof beams.
If you can’t tell how bad it is, a professional roof infection will determine the severity.
5. Interior Water Damage
This time of year brings quite a bit of rain. If the integrity of your roof is suffering, you’ll soon find out.
If you notice any water damage in your home after heavy rain showers, it’s likely coming in through the roof.
A good place to start looking is the attic. If you see damage or smell moisture up there, you might need an upgrade.
Before the storms blow in, you may consider a spring roof replacement.
6. Old Age
Signs that your roof needs replacement aren’t always visible. One such example is the roof age.
Shingle roofs should last around 15-25 years. If you have the paperwork from the last replacement, take a look at the age. If the roof is getting up there in age, it may be time for a new one.
7. New Roofs for Neighboring Houses
If you don’t know the age of your roof, there is another sign it may be getting old. If you’ve recently noticed many neighbors putting in new roofs, it could be a sign.
Many of the houses in the neighborhood were probably built around the same time and they experience the same weather. As such, the roofs will have similar wear.
