What to Do if You Have Moles in Your Yard: Should You Use Mole Traps?
People view moles from two points of view. On one end, moles can be helpful critters due to how they work wonders on the soil. On the other hand, moles end up as unsightly pests that damage the yard and leave burrows and small hills.
There are two approaches to this when you encounter moles in your yard. You can use mole traps to get rid of them, or you can leave them be and find ways to redirect them. Today, we look at the measures and options you have available when you have moles in your yard.
1. Spotting the Mole Signs
The first thing you need to do is to spot the signs that moles are within the area. One particular sign that would point that out is the fresh mounds of soil on your yard. Another would be the raised ridges around a hole.
These indicate that the mole traversed its way through your yard underground, burrowing tunnels to go through areas. They have a network of these tunnels and passageways where they can eat or sleep. The burrows and soil mounds denote the spots where they would traverse, some of which get reused at certain points.
Once you notice these signs, you have the option to get rid of the mole by trapping it or repelling it. This leads us to the methods on how you do so.
2. Trapping Moles
Trapping moles would require you to take note of where the moles hide. After taking note of the tunnels and earth mounds in your yard, pick the best mole trap that you want for the job. For this, you have two approaches in trapping them, which would come as follows.
Setting Mole Traps for Capture
This easy mole trap uses a design meant for trapping and capturing moles. Set this trap up on an active tunnel and you should be able to capture the mole after setting it up. As a note, make sure to check on this trap every now and then to see if it did capture the mole.
Setting Mole Traps for Extermination
This other form of the mole trap focuses on exterminating the moles from your yard. This takes up various design forms such as the scissor-jaw or the harpoon trap. Once it catches the mole, it goes straight for the kill.
Whichever type of trap you choose, you can check out the instructions on how to set the mole traps here. Make sure to check on the traps to see if you caught any.
3. Repelling Moles
In case you choose to not trap them, you can also choose the option of repelling them. For this, you can go for natural mole repellents. These work well if you prefer to get rid of the mole by letting them move elsewhere.
Should You Use Mole Traps?
You can use mole traps to get rid of moles. Though in this case, it matters what you want to accomplish. If you plan to kill the moles in your yard, any trap should work out well.
The other option is to let the moles move away by using repellent or letting them go as they are. Go with what suits your needs.
