5 Tips to Building a Garage: How to Do it Right
Over 55% of Americans spend one to two hours a week in their garage engaging in hobbies or other activities.
A garage can be a versatile space that you can make into your own workshop, art studio, or just use it for safely storing your vehicles.
Like many other Americans, if you are considering home renovations to extend your property by building a garage, then take a look at our guide. We have some great tips for how to build the home garage of your dreams.
Make Sure you Have the Right Permits.
First things first when planning a new construction project. Speak with your local planning department and check what you are allowed to build on your property. You need to know how large and tall the building is allowed to be and where you can build it.
This is an expensive mistake to make if you begin making additions to your house without the right permits. Don’t get caught out!
Build a Solid Foundation
Before anything else, you need to make sure you have a solid concrete base as a foundation for your building. This will mean hiring a contractor for the job as it will likely involve excavation work and heavy machinery.
Ensure you check the reputation of anyone you hire well in advance and check the restoration cost to any other parts of your garden that may be damaged or dug up during the procedure.
Add Electricity and Plumbing
Running electricity to the garage will be important for two things: lighting and an automatic garage door. A more modern garage door, such as a roll-up garage door, will require a power source to make it automatic. Roll-up doors are a great way to add value to a garage.
If you are using your garage as a workshop, you will need to check your building codes to meet any requirements for this type of usage.
Plumbing can be a nice touch if you add a sink or even a small bathroom into the garage. If you are looking to build a spare room into the attic space, then a bathroom may be essential.
Don’t Forget Ventilation!
Proper ventilation is important, particularly if you are working on engines or cars inside your garage. Again, make sure you check up on your building codes to see what is required for a building of your planned size and location.
Also, consider air conditioning and heating. If you plan to work in your garage throughout the year or make a part of it habitable, you will need to include some temperature controls.
Underfloor heating can make a nice addition to a garage in winter. If you want to install this, you will need to plan it early into your construction phase.
Consider Extra Storage Space
The attic space of a garage can easily be turned into a habitable space with an attic truss. They are expensive but can add tons of usable space, such as another room, to your garage building.
If you want a cheaper option, then look into installing a storage truss instead. It will still give plenty of room for those extra things you don’t need lying around the house anymore.
Building a Garage Adds a Range of Space
Whether you are building a garage for car storage, add an extra room, build a workshop or simply add more storage space, the versatile garage extension can add just what you need.
