What You Need to Ask Before Choosing an Assisted Living Facility
The population of the U.S. is aging. Currently, there are over 46 million adults over the age of 65 living in the country. By 2050, the number is projected to exceed 90 million.
As the country’s population gets older, the need for elderly care services grows. One such service that many families look into to provide a senior loved one the care they need is an assisted living facility.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of options. This can make the decision process challenging.
While this is true, there are some questions you can ask to help you find the right facility for your aging loved one. Keep reading to find out what the most important questions to ask are.
What Services Are Included with the Monthly Fee?
It’s important to stay informed about your costs and what services are included with the monthly fee. While the fee will likely cover the basics like rent, cable, internet, and utilities, you need to ask about other services that require funding.
For example, not all facilities include weekly housekeeping services. Or the included meal plan may not provide for snacks and similar items.
When choosing an assisted living facility, be sure to know, for sure, what is and is not covered.
What Type of Events or Activities Are Offered?
Modern assisted living facilities aren’t limited to one bingo night a week. They should have several events and activities for residents.
Be sure to get a copy of the monthly calendar for each facility you are considering. The goal is to find out if there are multiple opportunities planned for socialization and engagement.
You should also consider if the events and activities match your loved one’s needs or interests.
Does the Facility Provide Free Transportation or Transportation Alternatives for Residents?
Even if you plan to pick up and take your loved one to do things once they move in, you should still ask about the transportation services provided. Some provide exclusive bus services to essential locations, such as grocery stores, doctor’s appointments, banks, and more.
There could be other options offered, too. For example, residents may be given transportation vouchers. You may also have to coordinate with the staff when transportation services are needed.
Are On-Site Health Services Offered?
Are there doctors or clinicians who come to the assisted living community? Many different types of doctors may visit a facility a few times a month.
The location may also provide screening services and vaccination clinics. Be sure to ask about this when deciding.
